History of the Sydney Motor Show
The first Melbourne International Motor Show took place in 1925, and the event continued to be held in Melbourne until the year 2009. The motor show held in Sydney began in 1911 and was called the Sydney Motor Show until 2004 when the name was changed to the Australian International Motor Show. AIMS became more prominently used because the show had gained worldwide recognition and became one of the most prominent motor shows held anywhere in the world. The AIMS continued to be hosted in Sydney until 2009, when the Melbourne International Motor Show and the Australian International Motor Show formed a joint venture. The AIMS is still held every year in Australia, alternating bi-annually between Sydney and Melbourne.
For a majority of the Sydney Motor Show’s long history, the event was held at Moore Park in the halls of the Royal Agricultural Society. In 1988, a newly built Convention Centre at Darling Harbour took the place of the previous event location.
